I have yet another question for you, but a bit of background, first. In the East, scrolls are usually given at the time of the award, if it can be managed, regardless of whether or not the recipient has a registered device. Therefore, the scroll itself is also a surprise. There is generally a "contact person" listed on the scroll assignment,...a person who knows the gentle in question, and who can give some indication of persona, preferred styles, favourite colours, etc. Usually, the contact person is one of the people who made the recommendation in the first place. So far, so good? Okay, here's the question: What would you do if the contact person seems convinced that, although s/he doesn't know what style would suit the recipient, the recipient would love a scroll that has a part done in a _very_ way out of period way to make a sort of in-joke? Help? Please? I don't know the recipient at all. I do know the contact person, and am not entirely certain that he isn't just being "clever"....again. I would much appreciate any opinions, ideas, information, or anything on this question. Thanks in advance. As of yet I only have two pieces up there, but there should be more soon. I would really appreciate comments, either here or in private email. - --Geileis nic Dhughaill-- - --Geillis Rhiannon Walter-- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 May 1998 22:54:48 +0100 From: David Columbus Subject: [scribes]: re: [scribes] yet another question >Hello there, folks. People that know me understand that my philosophy on art is please yourself as well as the recipient. If you really want to do something different, then just do it! I have done quite a few 'out-of-period' pieces and the truth is, I have had far fewer "voiced concerns" from either the recipient or audience accepting what I had done than I would have expected. (And on a few of them I really expected something!) Granted there are those that feel that kind of stuff has its' place... somewhere else. But I always look at the name of our group. The Society for CREATIVE ANACHRONISM. I feel you should go out and be as creative as you can. When you do, occassionally you hit the bulleyes dead on. And that's a great feeling when it happens. BUT, if you really feel like this 'contact person' is not being completely truthful then go the conservative route. It would be a diaster giving an out-of-period piece to someone that really wanted a period piece. Not one of my out-of-period pieces ever went to someone I didn't KNOW would appreciate it. Whatever you decide to do it should be the most comfortable thing for yourself. Take that step beyond the norm ONLY when you know you are ready to journey there. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. B'wana Christofano ------------------------------ End of scribes digest V2 #32 ****************************
