There was a question earlier about more information on the National Calligrapher's Conference in San Diego this year for a week started July 26. It is held at UCSD, cost is expected to be about $850 - $950 (presumeably depending on the class you get), but it does include lodging and meals, as well as teacher expense and class supplies (?) . Their web site has more details, at www.alphabytes.com/discoveries. Some of the classes looked quite interesting, but there is a distinctly modern bias (one class is in designing your own coat of arms, by Diana van Aryx Something. I've seen her book, and thus was not particularly interested in her class. But Aidan Meehan teaching uncials, or Stan Knight, or Denis Brown (from Ireland) on copper leafing, a couple on book production, including LA's own Kitty Maryatt on Medieaval Book production (I've met her through the Society for Calligraphy and she's taught workshops at the Getty -- she knows her stuff) looked quite interesting. All in all, I decided to take the vacation time and money I have available for a yearly conference and split it among the Known World Heraldic Symposium in Tucson in June (SCA, and thus quite inexpensive -- but the heraldic advice is likely more reliable historically than what you find elsewhere. Must also tack on lodging expenses for a weekend) , and the American Needlepoint Guild's national conference in San Diego in first week of November (real-world prices, but still less than $500 -- but must add lodging to that. Me, I'm staying with my in-laws). So, you pays your money and you makes your choices, Eowyn Amberdrake, Caid Melinda Sherbring, member of Society for Calligraphy in LA (and EGA and ANG for good measure) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 May 1998 13:29:28 -0500 (CDT) From: Daffy + Chiara Subject: [scribes]: questions, questions Hi there! I recently received the Paper & Ink catalog, as well as a Pearl (discount art supplies) catalog (800-451-PEARL if anyone else wants to get one too!) Does anyone know if there's a difference between the dogtooth agate burnisher for $24 in Paper & Ink and the two listed in Pearl for $33 and $40? Also, I noticed an intriguing product in Pearl: the Instacoll gilding system, made by Sepp leaf products. According to the description, it gives a mirror finish without burnishing. I wonder if this would work on paper/parchment or is it just for wood? It's a two step system; there's a size and an "activator". Any thoughts? I've frequently found that with gilding what they describe as "mirror finish" seems to mean only that it reflects light - it's certainly not my definition of "mirror finish". Unburnished gold reflects just fine, but I've only achieved "mirror" finish by burnishing. And I doubt the surface involved would make any difference - I've seen Miriel gild wood and it still needs burnishing.
