I make my own slaked plaster, but have not tried the gilding recipe either. This book may be a little hard for those without any gilding experience to understand because there aren't any pictures or diagrams of actually doing the procedures. It does work well for those who just need a refresher course. Aside from the actual recipes and instructions, it covers a lot of the historical and technical aspects of gesso. Another book I would highly recommend ..especially for those who have not tried gilding....is _Secreta: Three Methods of Laying Gold Leaf_. by Joyce Grafe. It covers flat leafing with gum amoniac, raised gesso gilding and a modern (pre-mixed) gesso method. It has a lot of step by step pictures and a list of things that can...and do ...go wrong. Along with the gilding, there are instructions for using egg tempera and glair. There is also a color wheel for you to paint and a gilders cushion to make. All in all it's a pretty useful book...*Bonus-it's under $15. What are: bole glair "slaked" plaster Are these items I can purchase somewhere or make myself? What kind of place would I go to purchase them or the raw materials? Thanks!!!
