My name is Guillaume Bouvier of Nan Crioch Tuatha in the Kingdom of Trimaris (Jan Bovier, Jacksonville, FL). I am a 13th century French Crusader with interests in calligraphy and illumination. I would also like to try my hand a papermaking someday. As I am just getting started, and there are not a whole lot of people in the immediate area that do calligraphy and illumination, I need some advice. I recently priced the desighers gouches ($6-$14 for a 14 ml tube). I also found an acrylic gouche ($3 for a 4oz tube). Can anyone give me any insights on the pros/cons of the acrylic gouches. I want to get started with a minimal outlay of cash. I thank you in advance for your comments. Are you a friend of Baroness Sylvia the Landlady? She mentioned someone she new in Trimaris who was getting started in C&I. If so, please feel free to contact me privately if you'd like. I shall be changing my address by the end of the month...I will be found at meistern@netusa1.net actually starting today, but will keep this current address until the end of the month. A word of caution. Although acrylic gouaches are less expensive, they are not the best to use when attempting to reproduce Medieval-feeling scrolls. You "could" start with them, but part of the nice thing about regular gouaches is that they are water colors, and as such, can be layered or "moved" about. If you are going to attempt period work, you want your paints to move. Shading is done quite a lot, and with acrylics, you cannot do that. If you cannot afford to purchase a full range of regular gouaches, try getting just the primary colors (Primary Blue, Primary Red, Primary Yellow, Permanent or Zink White, and Lamp Black) and experiment with mixing your colors. Or, don't try to get all your colors at once, consider getting one or two tubes each payday. Or, purchase dry pigments and some gum Arabic. Or, find someone else interested in this art and share the cost. One tube of paint will usually last a fairly long time, and by sharing it, you may be able to get a larger range of pre-mixed colors. You will find some wonderful help on this list. Just be patient. Also, we all have different styles and such, so read everything and then make your decision about what to do. You have to find what works best for you. My way or someone else's way may not work for you every time. But keep an open mind and experiment. I'll get you a good mail order listing if you are interested (thanks to several gentles who posted to this list earlier in the year). >>> You said: I recently priced the desighers gouaches ($6-$14 for a 14 ml tube).
