I know the book you mean, I have drooled at it (not over it):) at the Met Bookstore in NY and up at the Cloisters, sigh, I think it goes for $150 and is on my (I want to Buy a lot) list. I didn't get to spend the kind of quality time that have though. Congradulations on the GREAT price you got. There is justice and mercy in the world. One reason I asked the question was I also have a needlepoint/cross-stitch book using patterns and designs rather indiscriminatly from The Book of Kells, Their interpretations, which they said were exactly from the manuscript, led me to believe that there had been extensive fading. So I really do need the facsimile, but I have only brief memory to go on. Hmmm.... When I lived in Ansteorra some 5 1/2 yrs ago, painted in copied scroll blanks were given out. They used very nice paper and I have several framed on my wall at home. The first time I saw award scrolls being custom done was here in Caid. Ansteorra had incredible scribes, but I don't think they were doing more for >awards< than designing scroll blanks and painting them in for the Signet Scribe. I did see some other incredible Scrolls that were done for other purposes. This was some time ago, things may have changed. In Ansteorra Landed Barons and Baronesses, as the voice of the Crown, may give out Kingdom awards. This practice differs from Caid. I don't remember East's practices and I don't know about any others. So the number of events a Crown attends from kingdom to kingdm may or may not matter to what is given out. I have been learning calligraphy & illumination for several years and have made perhaps half-a-dozen award scrolls for the regional signet. Most of the work I do is commissioned by individuals who want something specific (not necessarily a scroll), or have already received a scroll, but would like something more appropriate to their persona. (Since these are not for court, there is no time limit - my favorite situation) Outside the SCA, I am Cindy Baker from Bloomington/Normal, Illinois. I do free-lance illustration and work as a secretary at Illinois State University. Greetings to you all, and I look forward to hearing from you!
