The Census has gone very well so far with almost 40 of you replying. Some very preliminary results: The list is almost 35% Laurels. Most of the laurels take apprentices Of those that have them, the average number is 2. Most of us teach! The list has almost 11 scribal officers. More retired. About 1/3 of you have Kingdom arts awards. The list is divided about 60/40 Female to Male ratio (if that intersts you) The average age on the list is 33. 95% of us have web access. 2/3 of us use Netscape, most others use IE Now for some unpleasant results: I asked what could be done to improve the list. About half of you responded that the amount of traffic was excessive. CT has implemented a digest version of the list traffic (YAY) but there is some more to be done here. A number of you have written to me personally that you are dismayed by the amount of "me to!" type traffic that is currently on the list. To try to soothe this I am offering the following advice: Try not to respond with "One-Liners" to the whole list. Please be aware that the list is over 100 people long. Is what you want to say important enough to interupt a hundred people in their work? Would it be more appropriate to send it to selected individuals only? When you do respond to the list, try to include only the relevant parts of a discussion. Some people on the list pay by the minute or hour or have slow modem connections. Replies to posts on the list where 95% of the meesage is re-iteration of a previous post are inappropriate. A better ratio here would be about 50%. If you are posting humor to the list , preface your subject line with [Humor]. If the post is long preface it with [LONG]. Try to keep on topic. The list is going very well for the most part. We are making ALOT of progress here. I am afraid that if I come down to hard that I might cast a pall over the list and cut down on participation. If we can keep to these simple guidlines we will avoid people unsubscribing or me having to be a jerk about nettiquette. Remember: This is an academic list. It is intended to be educational. There is room for fun, but not at the expense of education. Sorry for the rant... Regards, Cystennin Ap Gereint. And what be e-mail, good my lady? 'Tis not known to me, be we ever so up-to-date these fourteen hundred and more years after Christ. I do know what acrylic is, however, and laid the raised gilding on Baroness Emrys's scroll by breathing on a gold seat made of Elmer's glue (several layers. Tell Tetchubah to lay the last layer down about 45 minutes before you want to gild. Won't work if it dries out completely. Can be slightly diluted with water) and burnished it over glassine and then with silk wrapped around my finger. I don't know why this works. Perhaps the Elmer's is soft enough to "give" when you rub it, without being sticky like a mordant. Oil size is okay, but Tetchubah is right, it can't be burnished. At least, I never have been able to do it. I have rubbed it with a silk cloth, though, after it's completely dry, and it sort of shines it up nice.
