[Antir_scribes] Gilded Seals AKA Re: another cool thing at July Coronation

Hi All!
Since there seems to have been such interest in the gilded seals I did
for Coronation, here is my notes on how I've gone about this:
I have used two different processes to gild seals:
Real gold - Lay down a thin layer of ground working into all the
crevasses and then apply gold leaf in layers - the result is gorgeous
but very delicate and cannot be handled
Shell gold - if you use a water soluble binder - like gouache - it
doesn't adhere nice to the wax so I use an acrylic medium as the shell
gold suspension instead. Apply two to three thin layers letting it dry
between. It is far less delicate than the real gold.
I've also used good quality artists gold acrylic paint - the kind with
real metal in it and that works too - again build up with thin layers
watching your brush marks. This is by far the most stable application.
And looks really good if you are using the good actual metal containing
artist acrylic.
The acrylic medium isn't period of course but painting onto cooled wax
is a tricky thing as wax repels most stuff. And using the acrylic
suspension means that the seal is far less delicate and can be handled
without the gold coming off.
I keep meaning to try fish glue with shell gold to see how that
adheres....
I hope that that is helpful!
And thanks for the props Bronwen and Wyn - you two are the ones who
rock!
Inga the Unfettered

Greetings to the scribes of An Tir from Bronwen,
Thought I'd write about something else new and cool to me that I saw at
July
Coronation.
Wyn the Waywarde created a beautiful scroll for Their Majesties use in
giving the award for the newest Lion of An Tir. The scroll was done on
a
dark background and illuminated with much shell gold. Truly beautiful
:-)
The kingdom seal (in both black and red) was not really appropriate to
complete the manuscript and so Her Majesty Inga had applied several
layers
of shell gold to a Kingdom Seal for the document.
VERY COOL ! and a perfect complement to the piece.
Mistress Inga also told me that she had applied gold leaf to seals in
the
past.
I have never seen this done before and thought that such a fun thing
should
be shared with you all
YIS
Bronwen

Countess Inga is THE BOMB!
Here's a picture of the scroll, and you can see that her shell gold
gilded seal *perfectly* matches the gold foiling letters and bars. I'd
never heard of doing that to a seal, and it just came out so
beautifully!
