Greetings Mir,
Thought to offer you and the list - my small experience with young people.
I too purchased a few sets of Reeves Gouache and plastic paint palettes (the
ones with small holes) and cheap fine brushes.
I designed a very simple graphic Lion's Cub Charter and had it printed onto
some fine paper that I hand cut (won't do it that way again - will probably
use paper similar to what the Kingdom uses for Charters). The Design was
very colorbook like and was made with very thick lines (that way, the paint
is usually contained better because the printed toner has some resist
qualities)
The Design was small (8 x 10) and I would probably do it on 8.5 x 11 today.
The design left off the names of the King and Queen so that these charters
would be everlasting - I've used them for about 12 or 13 years - but only
have about 4 or so left of the original 100.
I also printed the design on regular copy paper and had first time kids use
markers to show me how they intended to paint their real charter.
Anyway - the thing is, that I tell the kids that when they are finished,
they can take their piece to the Queen and offer it as a gift for Their
Majesties use. (I usually fill in the King and Queen names before it is
given). In addition to this, I also taught the children to bead a necklace
to go with the award document. This way, the King and Queen had all They
needed to give out the award to a worthy child.
I believe the kids found real satisfaction in their service and that this
was a great teaching tool to help children learn service in AnTir.
This is all sort of age and maturity dependent - some of the paintings were
unusable. But many Children really take this seriously - when they
understand what they are painting. Also, the coloring of a sample - up
front - can prove a child's willingness and ability to complete the task.
One of the most important things that I found with teaching kids (and some
new adults) is that you only need a small dab of paint - and that the paint
can be re-hydrated after it drys in the tray to still be useful. Biggest
problem - wasted paint. Second biggest problem - trying to lay paint that
was too dry.
