Greetings to the Scribes of AnTir and to The Black Lion Principal Herald
from Bronwen,

I have a few things to pass on to you tonite about Scroll Texts.

First of all
the texts that are on the AnTir College of Scribe's web pages are examples

Secondly
You can write your own texts for the scrolls that you are working on

unless you are doing a Master Charter Design for Their Majesties,
(Their Majesties have texts that They have written that are to be used for
all the Charter Designs for Their Reign and if you write something different
for a Charter you are designing, you must seek Their Majesties permission to
use it)

So...
you can write your own - and sometimes there are even classes offered on
writing "more period texts" which are quite informative :-)

However, be aware - there are requirements in scroll texts and they are
these:

*The Address* [names the intended audience]
Example: *To all whom these presents shall come...
*
*The Intitulation* [states the title(s) and name(s) of the giver(s)]
Example: *We Vik, by right of arms, King AnTir and Inga, Queen AnTir
*
*The Notification and Exposition* [declares the deeds and name(s) of the
recipient(s)]
Example: *in recognition that Peter Piper has served Our Kingdom most
graciously with his ability to pick a peck
*
*The Disposition* [identifies the gift]
Example: *do hereby award him an Award of Arms*

*The Corroboration and Date* [gives the verification, validation and date]
Example: *all this We do confirm by Our hand and Seal this day the ___ of
___ A.S.____*

Also,
*Space for Their Majesties signatures*
*and*
*Their Great Seal or Their Signet Seal*

There are a number of different opening phrases for scroll texts to choose
from
you can find them here
  http://www.scribes.antir.sca.org/Scrolls-Charters/s-openings.html

also there is a good set of mix and match pieces of text wordings in the
Middle Kingdom's Scribe's Handbook starting on page #37
which you can view here
http://www.randyasplund.com/browse/mkshb/mksb.pdf

*Additional Requirements for Heraldic Achievement Scrolls:*
If the individual that you are making the scroll for has their heraldic
device passed with the College of Heralds - the scroll can include the
"Heraldic Achievement" of the award being presented - or in other words,
*the "blazon"* (written description of the heraldic device)
and
*the "emblazon"* (graphic image of the heraldic device)
and
*the "Achievement"* (graphic enhancements to the device which portray the
level of the award)

Achievements have certain rules of use - for each level of award in AnTir
and you can find that information here
http://www.antirheralds.org/display/achievements/achievements.html

The scroll wording then has something added to it usually right before the
Corroboration and Date like: *and We do award him the right to bear these
arms to wit* *"the blazon"
*
(I like to "rubricate" the blazon - which means - do it in red ink)

Additionally,
if a scroll shows an heraldic achievement - then you must also leave room
for
*the Black Lion Principal Herald's seal and signature *
(nice to add some small statement like "verum est" [it is true] preceding
the place for signature)

**
**
*This is very important*

Remember, if you are doing a scroll for Their Highnesses of Avacal, TirRigh
or the Summits to hand out - which is a Kingdom Level Award (this does not
pertain to principality level awards)
the text wording MUST contain Their Majesties Names and a statement giving
permission to Their Highnesses to give the award - in addition to Their
Highnesses names - and must include a place for all four of the Royal
Signatures and for the seal of the Kingdom and the seal of the Principality

my oh my - that must be why Principality given AoA's and Viscounty Scrolls
are SO BIG :-)

here is why this rule must be followed...

*Excerpts from AnTir Kingdom Law*

*"The power to bestow all awards flows from the Crown"*
**
*"The Principality Coronets, with the permission of the Crown, may bestow
Awards of Arms to the subjects of Their Principality.*
*(1) The names of the Crown shall be incorporated into the text of the
scroll or charter"*
**
*"The Crown of An Tir grants the Principality Coronets the privilege of
offering a Patent of Arms by recognizing the attainment of Viscounty rank by
those who have met the requirements as outlined in Corpora".*
**

*And here is something new (changed)*

We have been sending scroll texts to Black Lion Principal Herald for
approval

Her Royal Majesty Inga believes and insists that the Kingdom Scribe be
required to have the proper education and knowledge needed to approve scroll
texts and has decreed that Scroll texts are now to approved by Sable Sable,
Kingdom Scribe and not Black Lion Principal Herald.

Black Lion Principal Herald is still fully responsible for the accuracy of
Heraldic "blazons" and "emblazons" as well as the "name of the recipient" on
scrolls that show an Heraldic Achievement and must approve of all before
signing and sealing the scroll.

So,
if you have written up your own text for a scroll - you need to send it to
Sable Sable (that's me :-) for review so that it can be assured that none of
the wording is inappropriate to the award. You can still send the text to
Black Lion if you like and you can also send it to the King and Queen - but
remember that They have many many other responsibilities and issues to deal
with and that The Crown has delegated the responsibility of this task to the
Kingdom Scribe.

So, thats all for tonight
I'm pooped ;-)
time for bed
hope that I didn't mess this up because I stayed up to late :-S

Oh - all this is will be available on the Scribes website soon :-)

YIS
Bronwen
