Greetings,
I am scribe to the Shire of Dragon's Mist. I work to encourage the
scribal arts in our shire and thus enrich the Kingdom.
I participate in demos at schools where we have a write your name
Medieval style and paint an Illuminated Letter bookmark activities for
children. For the write your name activity we have strips of paper
and felt calligraphy pens. We have each letter of the alphabet
written in both Uncil and Gothic Textura Quadrada. We use the letters
to make whatever name/word they want and they practice writing it on
the strip of paper.
For the bookmarks we have pre-printed bookmarks with each letter of
the alphabet. We teach them to paint in two colors, show them
examples of illuminated letters, and if they are interested/old
enough, we have them do whitework.
I organize the painting of kingdom charters within our shire, teaching
basic painting techniques, providing materials, and helping with
painting questions.
I teach ithra classes on painting and my son teaches ithra classes on
calligraphy and materials.
As shire's do not have awards, we give out painted charters as tokens
of thank you and acknowledgement of service to the shire. I believe
we might have given out pretty pieces of paper for champions as well.
We haven't handed out any charters for several years as we lost all of
our materials when the then scribe passed from cancer. The office was
vacant until I took it on several months ago. I have not yet been
able to recover the charter masters.
I do not believe that the office of scribe should be mandatory. One
must be drawn to the scribal arts as a bit of self is given in each
piece of artwork we create.
