To Interested Scribes and Future Scribes of An Tir:  (apologies if you
receive this multiple times)

 

The class schedule is finally in place.  Reserve your space now if you are
interested in attending the first Dragon's Laire Scribal Guild Scriptorium
and Retreat.  There is room for 30 attendees at this retreat.  Saturday
Night Potluck BBQ and Sunday Morning hot breakfast for overnighters.

Saturday & Sunday, August 23rd and 24th

 

There is no fee to attend this event however some classes have minimal fees
to cover supply costs.

 

Please email Anne Brynley to reserve your space or if you have any
questions.  moonfeather at comcast.net  Please indicate classes you wish to
take, whether or not you will be staying over or whether you will just
attend on Saturday only.  Please provide name and contact information.
Those who have already reserved space at the retreat, please let me know
which classes you'd like.

 

Saturday Classes:

 

GOUACHE PAINTING TECHNIQUES (9:00 to 1:00 - Room One)

Instructor: Dame Tamlyn of Wyntersea

Cost: $2

Duration: 4 hours

Students: 8 students

Description: Students will learn through practicing basic gouache painting
techniques for use on Scrolls and Charters including "Washes" a medieval
method of layering paint and will take away a palette of paint (to keep) and
a Kingdom charter to paint for homework.

 

MANUSCRIPT STYLE GUIDE (2:00 to 4:00 - Room Two)

Instructor:  Dame Tamlyn of Wyntersea

Cost: $2

Duration: 2 hours

Students: 8 students

This class will take students through an exercise in looking in-depth at a
single manuscript, its text and decorative characteristics as a source for
their scroll. The intent is to help students create a more medieval look and
feel to their scrolls. Students may bring their favorite
manuscript-specific/facsimile book or the instructor will provide one.

 

ACHIEVEMENTS FOR AWARDS SCROLLS  (4:00 to 6:00 - Room Two)

Instructor:  Dame Tamlyn of Wyntersea

Cost: $2

Duration: 2 hours

Students: 8 students

Students will go through the heraldic requirements for a scroll. Subjects
covered include: Guidelines for An Tir Scrolls; Period examples of
Achievements; Process for getting Black Lion's approval for your scroll.
Heraldic don'ts.

 

BASIC CALLIGRAPHY - SUPPLIES & TECHNIQUES - UNCIAL HAND

(9:00 to 11:00 - Room Two)

Instructor:  Lady Suzanne

Duration: 2 hours

Students will learn what supplies are used for calligraphy and will learn a
basic calligraphy hand often used on the Norse charters and scrolls.  Paper
will be supplied.  Please bring a cartridge calligraphy pen (not a felt
tip).

 

CALLIGRAPHY - CAROLINGIAN MINISCULE HAND

(11:00 to 1:00 - Room Two)

Instructor:  Lady Suzanne

Duration:  2 hours

Students will learn the calligraphy hand Carolingian Miniscule, a hand used
frequently on manuscripts during the Middle Ages.  Paper will be supplied.
Please bring a cartridge calligraphy pen (not a felt tip.)

 

RAISED GILDING  (4:00 to 6:00 - Room One)

Instructor:  THL Renart "the fox" of Berwick

Duration:  2 hours

Students will learn the art of raised gilding (goldwork) on scrolls.  This
is the very ornate goldwork on illuminated manuscripts.

 

FLAT GILDING  (2:00 to 4:00 - Room One)

Instructor:  THL Renart "the fox" of Berwick

Duration:  2 hours

Students will learn the art of flat gilding (goldwork) on scrolls.  This is
another form of goldwork used on illuminated manuscripts.

 

FINDING AND TRANSFERRING DESIGNS FOR PAINTING

(2:00 to 4:00 - Room One)

Instructor:  Sensei Tsuruko

Duration:  2 hours

Students will learn where and how to find designs and then transfer them to
paper for use on scrolls and charters.

 

COMMUNITY SCRIBAL AREA:  There will be a community scribal area for those
not in a class.  You may work on your own projects.  Please bring your own
supplies if you have them.  There will be experienced scribes available for
those needing assistance.  If you do not have your own supplies, there are
some loaner supplies available.  This is a casual, fun way to get to know
other scribes and learn tips and tricks from each other.

 

Sunday is a "working on projects" day.  There will be experienced scribes
available for one-on-one assistance.  Bring unfinished charters, work on
scrolls, or just practice what you learned on Saturday.

 

Saturday night there will be a Potluck BBQ.  Meat will be provided.  Bring a
dish to share.  Students need to provide their own lunches and snacks.

 

A hot breakfast will be provided to those who stay over to Sunday (there is
some inside crash space available and some lawn space for mundane tents).

 

(This is a "no children, no pets event.")

>From South - From Hwy 3, take Finn Hill Rd. Exit, turn left.  Go west on
Finn Hill Rd. to Rude Rd. (just past the Kitsap PUD bldg.)  Turn left on
Rude Rd. then first left onto Kaster Rd.  Address is 20823 Kaster Rd.
(Follow the signs.)

 

>From North - Hwy 3 to Olympic College/Hwy 305/Poulsbo exit.  Go straight
which will be Olhava Rd.  Stay on Olhava until Finn Hill Rd.  Turn right on
Finn Hill Rd. to Rude Rd. (just past the Kitsap PUD bldg.)  Turn left on
Rude Rd. then first left onto Kaster Rd.  Address is 20823 Kaster Rd.
(Follow the signs.)

 

>From Bainbridge Ferry - after exiting ferry, get on Hwy 305 and go towards
Poulsbo.  Follow Hwy 305 all the way to the end.  (You will pass "under" Hwy
3.)  When you get to Olhava Rd, turn left.  (If you see Olympic College, you
went too far.)  Stay on Olhava until Finn Hill Rd.  Turn right on Finn Hill
Rd. to Rude Rd. (just past the Kitsap PUD bldg.)  Turn left on Rude Rd. then
