Annisa,
I understand better now - what you are looking for
I'm just going to say this for the moment.
We use a lot of different databases at work (in example; my team manages
one that holds the revision data and images of over 35,000 drawings, we
also have one for over 1 million written documents (52 years of plant
engineering stewardship) and one for the maintenance data for every piece
of equipment, in two 10 generator Hydro plants)
Anyway - the one thing that I know about databases is that they are
practicably unsearchable unless there is a predefined set of Key Words or
"Keys" (categories).
I agree with you on the need and want - and I think it is justifiable
to try and make it happen.
But...
it absolutely must be set-up - so that searching is easy - where
we have anticipated the needs of the user and prepared the database to
meet those needs. Otherwise we have a product that people can not easily
use and end up being unhappy with and not using it at all.
So, although I do not in any way want to put a damper on the idea - I also
do not want to hurry it.
It's a big project and if we want to take it on - we want for it to be
successful.
You have given some really good definition so far - maybe for now we can work
on fine tuning the scope/definition.
Like:
If a scribe were to describe their interest(s) and/or expertise by say style/time period
And we gave them specific choices to pick from - that could later be a search choice
What would the names of those choices be?
or like
the names of skills
Calligrapher
Illuminator
Word Smith
translator - english to french
translator - english to latin
translator - english to russian
etc...
Said differently
if we let someone put down whatever they want - and they write that they "carve stone"
and
later a searcher comes looking for a "Carver"
the search will not return with anyone - because the searchers word "carver" won't return anything with just "carve" in it
Ohhhh
now I'm just rambling
and I need to stop it
I am taking the suggestion seriously
I would like to have it out there
It would be more than cool
Bronwen

Thanks-
Though I have often wished that there was a "currently active scribe directory", my question yesterday was prompted by a request which falls outside of the kingdom scroll roster format.
The kingdom bardic champion is hosting a bardic competition in Corvaria, and wanted to have a document made for the winner of that competition. He asked me whether that was a possibility, and how he could get it made.
Along those lines, I have also had requests for help with formal invitations to events, prize documents similar to the kind described above, and am currently looking for scribes to do original baronial scrolls.
As far as I know, there is no central source for these kinds of tasks, though it would be very useful for many people who want nice-looking documents for anything other than kingdom heraldry awards.
I would be happy to help set up a format for such a thing, but still haven't figured out how to get the names to fill it up with!
What I would love to see would be an online spreadsheet with:
Name of scribe
Contact info (preferably encrypted, like an email link)
Skills / specialties (calligraphy only, favorite styles/periods, foreign languages, stone carving ability, etc.)
Possibly branch or region info
Current availability or scheduled projects
The idea being that someone looking for a scribe would have someplace to go to find one, and some basis for choosing which one would be appropriate to approach with their particular project. There are several tools available for online lists which can be updated by individuals (rather than having one person have to maintain it).
Anybody else think this would be useful?
Annisa

whohave had their name and personal heraldic device passed by the Heralds andentered into the Society Ordinary and Armorial.Once these two things were in place, a Document (Scroll) could then be producedthat was a "truer to historical" representation of 1) An Award ofArms, 2) A Grant of Arms or 3) A Patent of Arms (plus I think there might be oneor two other types). The Heraldic Blazon and Emblazon (Heraldic Achievement) would of course beincluded on this document and it would have the additional signature and seal ofthe Black Lion Principal Herald added to the seal and signatures of the Crownswho originally presented the award. This may have changed (Dame Tamlyn please let us know)otherwise, Dame Tamlyn also has the names of Scribes who might be looking alsoto do non-heraldic original scrollsand I believe that she could get you in contact with some of them if you
askedher.Hopefully, we can make the type of information you are seeking - more readilyavailable to the gentry in the near (or sort of near) future.Bronwen Sable Sable_______________________________________________Antir_scribes mailing listAntir_scribes at castle.orghttp://www.castle.org/mailman/listinfo/antir_scribes
