[Antir_scribes] Baronial Scribe - discussion topic

Greetings from Dame Tamlyn,

The Kingdom Scroll Roster is available for those who should have received
original scrolls and didn't (usually Peerage, Court Barony, and some other
types of awards depending on the Reign) and request one; those who had
received Promissories in the past from An Tir Royalty and make a request for
a scroll now (the old backlog was cleared away about 8-9 years ago); and for
those who had received an armigerous award for which they were given a
charter (which had fulfilled the Crown's obligation for award "paper") if
their name and device are registered with the heralds and they request one.
There are some other special circumstances, but I don't think people want to
go through the kind of disasters those might entail:-x.

The order in which assignments are given from the roster is usually: Current
Reign's needs (to those who can work within the time frame and even some
like me who can't quite:-s); Awards for which the recipient should have
received a scroll and didn't get anything or promissory era awards; people
who received charters and wish to have an original scroll created with their
achievement.

A scribe wishing to take a specific assignment (we ask that you try to do
assignments for those other than just your friends) can get any assignment
they are qualified/experienced enough to do (usually one starts at the AoA
level, then the Grant level and finally the Peerage level) which doesn't
have a scribe already assigned and the recipient is willing to have work on
the award. This is important in that the recipient has the right to refuse a
scroll (that doesn't happen very often and if the recipient doesn't have a
really good reason for it they are moved to the very bottom of the
assignments available for work list - if they requested a specific scribe
and got them even this may not happen).

The main differences between charters and scrolls (other than one is a
pre-print and the other is a completely original work) is the use of the
recipient's personal heraldry (and Black Lion's seal and signature) and that
charters tend to be designed to the Royalty's persona and scrolls are based
on the persona or wishes of the recipient (within reason and the scribe's
abilities:-} since Their Majesties and Black Lion still need to sign them
off. Some scrolls may get pushed to the top because a scribe can do certain
styles very well and we try to match them to something they feel capable to
do.

If you are interested in doing scrolls for the Kingdom please contact me on
how to get started if you aren't already working on one:-}

All assignments that need the Royal Signatures go through the Scroll Roster
which coordinates signatures and seals and records the assignment (so we
know that it is complete - a recipient only receives one scroll per award so
if they have one we want to know it:-).

For this last Reign (Cedric and Elizabeth) there were 31 scroll needed - all
have Scribes assigned, 21 have been given to the award recipients, 3 are
nearly complete or complete and undelivered to my knowledge, and 7 are
hopefully in-work and to be delivered at 12th Night if not before (which
means that the scribe is too busy to work on the current Reign's
assignments:-<).

So in direct answer to the question: The Scroll roster lists only scroll
assignments (and if/when it gets online this would be so as well) and not a
list of scribes. However if you put out onto the lists that you are
searching for a scribe there is a possibility that one might answer and take
and you can negotiate/commission a scroll (though usually when the Royal
Scribes put out requests on the Scribes' list I don't think they always get
enough scribes replying that they would be willing to work on one - when I
put out a request this last Reign with about a half dozen possible
assignments I only got one response from the list ...luckily I knew where
some additional scribes could be located:-}.

Okay,
I hope that I get this one right (Dame Tamlyn - please help if I mess up :-)

Dame Tamlyn is our Kingdom Scroll Roster Deputy.

She keeps the data and is working on getting it into a database format that
we may all someday have access too (huge huge undertaking!)

As I once understood it - The Roster was reserved for those individuals who
have had their name and personal heraldic device passed by the Heralds and
entered into the Society Ordinary and Armorial.

Once these two things were in place, a Document (Scroll) could then be
produced that was a "truer to historical" representation of 1) An Award of
Arms, 2) A Grant of Arms or 3) A Patent of Arms (plus I think there might be
one or two other types).

The Heraldic Blazon and Emblazon (Heraldic Achievement) would of course be
included on this document and it would have the additional signature and
seal of the Black Lion Principal Herald added to the seal and signatures of
the Crowns who originally presented the award.

This may have changed (Dame Tamlyn please let us know)

otherwise, Dame Tamlyn also has the names of Scribes who might be looking
also to do non-heraldic original scrolls
and I believe that she could get you in contact with some of them if you
asked her.

Hopefully, we can make the type of information you are seeking - more
readily available to the gentry in the near (or sort of near) future.
