A cell is the basic unit of administrative control. Within a cell there is a namespace of volumes, which are logical grouping of files. The concept of "volume" should be familiar to you if you've used Veritas VXfs, IBM JFS, or tru64 ADVfs.
Clients and servers belong to a particular cell; data storage takes place on servers, each of which has at least one vice partition for storing AFS data.
