ptserver: users, groups, group memberships.
vlserver: where volumes are located.
These first two must be very high availablity. AFS basically doesn't work without them.
buserver: backup server; dumpsets, tape use, etc. Not required; many sites run other backup solutions.
kaserver: Essentially a Kerberos 4 KDC with a different database layer and admin protocol. Also not a requirement, although you must run some form of authentication server; many sites prefer to use a MIT or Heimdal Kerberos 5 KDC.
