History
Developed at CMU in 80s as part of Andrew; joint research project
with IBM
Later spun off into Transarc labs, which was absorbed
by IBM; sold AFS as commercial product.
September 2000 - announcement of OpenAFS, open source branch of
AFS 3.6 released under IPL.
Source released October 2000.
Since that time, OpenAFS has gone through several releases,
been ported to many new platforms, and been adopted by many longtime
customers of Transarc/IBM AFS.
