History

  • Developed at CMU in 80s as part of Andrew; joint research project with IBM

  • Later spun off into Transarc labs, which was absorbed by IBM; sold AFS as commercial product.

  • September 2000 - announcement of OpenAFS, open source branch of AFS 3.6 released under IPL.

  • Source released October 2000.

  • Since that time, OpenAFS has gone through several releases, been ported to many new platforms, and been adopted by many longtime customers of Transarc/IBM AFS.
