Another OpenAFS feature is dynroot.

With this feature, rather than mounting root.afs for your home cell when the AFS client is started, the client will dynamically produce a /afs from the contents of the CellServDB; no remote servers will be contacted until you try to access a file. This makes starting AFS without network much less painful.
